Islamiyat Department
The Department of Urdu / Arabic / Islamiyat is the central pillar which shapes the ideologies of the school as a whole. The role of this Department extends beyond just the classroom learning and teaching.
In general terms the Department, carries out the following roles:
- Teach the subjects of Urdu, Quraan and Islamic Studies from year 9 to year 13.
- Provide moral and spiritual guidance to staff and students.
- Supervise Zuhar and Juma prayers; for girls in the salaat hall and for boys at Nadi Jame Masjid.
- Carry out counselling sessions for students generally and also on a need basis.
- Organize and carry out various Islamic programmes such as Ramadhan activities, Eid celebration, Seeratun Nabi.
- Train students in areas of public speaking, Quraan Tilawat, Impromptu speech, Islamic Quiz and Nazam recital.
- Act as the Islamic advisory board to the school administration team on matters pertaining to school culture and its compliance.
- Carry out awareness campaigns on HALAAL compliance through out the year on matters such as attire, special events, fund raising, staff social, student mufti and other celebrations.
- Train students for calling out Adhan and conducting Hadith reading at Nadi Jame Masjid.
Mission Statement
DEPT. MISSION: Imparting religious, spiritual knowledge and to propagate the true doctrines of Islamic teaching amongst the students and set examples of a good Muslim Ummah (person).
Vision Statement
To acquire Islamic knowledge according to the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Subjects Offered by the Department
Urdu – This is an academic and examinable subject which falls under the curriculum of the Ministry of Education. Urdu is offered from year 9 to year 13 which has witnessed an increasing interest level amongst students. This is a highly scoring subject whereby students normally excel in their examinations. Urdu language equips students which Islamic culture and the ability to read, understand and present Islamic Sources of knowledge such as Urdu translation of the Holy Quraan, Hadith books and various other Islamic books. Students doing Urdu can opt for a teaching career locally. Since the past 2 years, Fiji Urdu Teachers Association has liaised with World Urdu Association whereby a Bachelor’s degree in Urdu is now offered to local students by Jamia Millia Islamia University of New Delhi, India. This has paved a variety of career paths in Urdu.
Quraan reading – This is an integral part of the school culture whereby students learn Qaidah and Quraan reading. Their reading progress is documented and the students move along at the pace of their learning ability. We are thankful to Fiji Muslim League for initiating the Annual Quraan Awards program which has given an incentive to students to memorize certain portions of the Quraan and receive awards in an exclusive ceremony. Students who excel in this also take part in competitions and proceed to tertiary or madrasah level to do Alim / Hafiz courses. The Department conducts maktab classes every morning from 7:30am to 8:20am to supplement the Arabic classes scheduled in the time table.
Islamic Studies – This field of study teaches the general Islamic values and practical knowledge to students. Through this course of Islamic studies from year 9 to year 13 a student is equipped with the basic knowledge to perform important duties in daily life such as Ghusl, Wudhu, prayers, fasting, Zikr, Zakat, Hajj, Halaal Business activities, Ghusl / kafan for the deceased, recite Adhan and perform Janazah prayer. This forms the basis for students wishing to specialise in the fields of becoming an Alim / Alima, Hafiz, Mufti.
Department facilities
The Department is equipped with 2 salaat halls from the academic year 2024. This is to cater for the growing number of Muslim students. Salaat hall 1 is located upstairs which is fully rugged and airconditioned with an attached ablution area with shoe racks. Salaat hall 2 is located downstairs which also has an ablution area attached to it. Additionally, this salaat hall has provision for both; sitting using desk and chair and also sitting on the rug using the maktabs for Quraan reading. The salaat halls are equipped with copies of Quraan, Hadith and other Islamic books.
